This was my very first time photographing at Greenhill Park, and I have to say—it completely won me over. Nestled in Salem, Virginia, this beautiful park has everything a photographer could hope for: a peaceful river, open fields, and a breathtaking mountain backdrop. It’s the kind of place that makes you wonder how you’ve never been there before.

What made this session extra special is that it was for my friend Kelsey—another local photographer here in the New River Valley (check out Soulful Shots Photography!) . We decided to swap family photos, and I can’t tell you how much fun it was to capture her with her family. Photographers spend so much time behind the camera that it’s a real treat when they get to be in front of it, soaking in the moment with their loved ones.

We began our session in one of the park’s open fields, with the mountains stretching gently across the horizon. The evening sun poured golden light over the grass, and the ridges looked timeless and serene in the distance. The kids ran through the tall grass, their laughter echoing through the open space, while Kelsey and her husband shared a few sweet moments together. It was relaxed, natural, and full of joy—the perfect way to start our evening.

After soaking up the beauty of the fields and mountains, we made our way down to the riverbank. The water was calm, catching the last warm light of the day. The kids dipped their toes into the cool water, sending ripples out across the surface. The quiet flow of the Roanoke River made this part of the session feel extra peaceful and intimate.

Sessions like this remind me why I love being a photographer. It’s not just about the location—though Greenhill Park was an absolute dream—it’s about capturing a season of life exactly as it is. One day, this family will look back at these images and remember not just how they looked, but how they felt in that moment: together, joyful, and completely present.

As a fellow photographer, Kelsey knows the value of being in the frame, not just behind it. Swapping sessions with another creative friend is such a gift—we both walked away with not only beautiful images of our families, but also a reminder of how important it is to document our own lives. It’s easy to let the years pass without pausing to capture them, but evenings like this remind me: these are the moments worth holding onto.
