Bringing a new baby home is one of life's most tender and fleeting seasons.

In the swirl of sleepy days and snuggly nights, time has a way of blurring—fast. That’s why lifestyle newborn sessions mean so much to me. They’re quiet, authentic, and grounded in what matters most: your love, your connection, and the sacred everyday magic of life at home.

If you’re preparing for a lifestyle newborn session, here are a few recommendations to help you feel ready—and to make the most of these meaningful moments.

1.  Keep Baby Comfortable

The heart of a lifestyle session is capturing your baby as they are—in your arms, in your home, in their natural rhythm. No stiff poses. No studio setups. Just softness and real life.

  • Try to feed baby just before the session so they’re full, relaxed, and (hopefully) sleepy.
  • A simple onesie, soft swaddle, or even just a diaper and blanket is perfect. Neutrals photograph beautifully and keep the focus on baby’s features.
  • Have a few extra outfits, blankets, and burp cloths on hand—just in case. Messes are part of the story, too.

2.  let the light in

Natural light brings warmth and softness to your images, so I’ll typically be drawn to the brightest areas of your home—often the nursery, bedroom, or living room.

  • Open all your blinds and curtains before I arrive to let that beautiful window light in.
  • No need to deep-clean your space—I’m not photographing your baseboards, I promise. I’ll gently move anything that’s distracting so we can focus on connection, not clutter.

3.  Wear soft, neutral tones

When it comes to clothing, think soft, cozy, and timeless. What you wear doesn’t need to be fancy—it just needs to feel like you.

I recommend sticking with neutral, earthy tones—creams, taupes, terracotta, sage green, soft blues or blush. These colors help create an airy, peaceful feel and photograph beautifully indoors.

  • Avoid bright colors, bold patterns, or anything with large logos.
  • Texture is your friend—knit sweaters, linen tops, and layered fabrics add a lovely depth without being distracting.

4.  Slow Down and Snuggle In

The goal of this session isn’t to pose perfectly—it’s to capture the real, unfiltered love that’s already alive in your home. I’ll guide you gently, but you don’t need to perform.

  • Cuddle your baby. Kiss their forehead. Breathe them in. Those are the moments that matter.
  • If you have any heirlooms or meaningful items—a baby book, handmade blanket, or special stuffed animal—we can absolutely incorporate them.

5.  Include the whole family

These sessions are about your story, and everyone who’s a part of it. Siblings, grandparents, and pets are always welcome.

  • If older siblings are joining, I recommend having a quiet activity nearby for when they’re not in photos. Think books, puzzles, or a favorite toy.
  • And if your pup is part of the family? Let’s include them too! Pets bring a beautiful, candid energy to these sessions—and they’re often the first “baby” in the house.

6.  Trust the process

Babies are unpredictable, and that’s okay. Lifestyle sessions are built to be flexible and baby-led. If your little one needs to nurse, be changed, or just have a moment—we pause.

There’s no rush. No pressure. Just space to be present with your baby.

Final Thoughts

Lifestyle newborn photography is less about “posing” and more about preserving. These are the early days—the ones that will blur and pass and leave you wondering how they ever went so fast.

My job is to gently guide you through the session so that it feels natural, unrushed, and meaningful. You don’t need to do or be anything other than what you already are: the safe place your baby calls home.

If you’re expecting and would love to document this season, I’d be honored to walk alongside you.
